Erik Freij – Exhibition

We are super happy to announce our latest exhibition here at No.1 Harbourside with artist Erik Freij.

Erik Freij

Erik Freij is a Bristol based artist focused on print and design, with much of his current work depicting animals. Within each of his illustrative compositions he emphasises fun plus a little silliness, whatever the subject matter. His work often rewards the viewer with a keen eye for sub narrative imagery within both his narratively driven and non-narrative work.

Why Bristol?

Bristol for me feels like the perfect balance of city and village, a combination of low-key and bigger events, bigger spaces and larger spaces to find your home.

How was the pandemic for you – productive or a struggle for inspiration?

As a creative lucky enough to be placed under the furlough scheme the pandemic has treated me well. I continuously created new things every day. Deepened my understanding in things outside of illustration like carpentry, silversmithing, gardening and lots of other things.

What spurs you on / keeps you creating?

Whilst creativity has taken a backseat with the restrictions being lifted my social life has taken the reins for a bit. That being said, social interaction is the thing that inspires me the most.

Where are your best places in Bristol for checking out art?

You don’t have to go far and wide in Bristol to see art. It’s plastered across the walls and signs all over. Most cafes seem to have their own galleries but I recommend taking it to the streets.

If you could exhibit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would like to exhibit on some large street-side walls, maybe in Budapest, Copenhagen or Berlin, those are my favourite places to visit so I think that would be great.

What’s next?

I’m not sure what comes next, I don’t want to limit myself to one form of creativity. I want to become multi disciplined, I might move to Sweden or Germany and broaden my skills, maybe industrial design or something?

Where else can people find out about you?

As it is right now the best place to see what I do is on my social media.

You can check out his Instagram here.

We love it all, the bright colours, the hidden humour, the nod to stuff we recognise. Come down and visit us to check it out. The exhibition will be up from now – 19 Sept 2021. All prints are available to buy. Please speak to a member of our bar team.

Artist Pilar Cortés Guest Post: Paintings. From the past.

Pilar Cortés. Paintings. From the past.

I am very grateful to have the opportunity to exhibit at the No.1 Harbourside. This time, I will take the opportunity to exhibit some old paintings that have never been exhibited before. In doing so, I am showing these paintings with the intention of selling them at at a considerably reduced rate in order to subsidise my upcoming solo exhibition in Hamilton House the end of August (details to come soon) as well as funding material costs for future paintings.

I am a Mexican painter, graduated in 2007 with BA in Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), based in Bristol, UK since 2008. After 6 years of working from Coexist, Hamilton House, I now work at my studio at Mivart Studios, Bristol.

My work has been exhibited widely throughout more than 30 exhibitions in Mexico, Colombia, the UK and Spain. Highlighted shows include 3005 Women in Mexican Fine Arts, Museum of Mexico City; 2017 Threshold Festival, Unit 51, Baltic Creative, Liverpool, UK; 2014 Fascinate digital arts Conference and Showcase, Falmouth University.

‘It seems the need to define people’s identities through the question of where they come from, extends not just to individuals but also to landscape painting. I want the viewer to form a relationship with the painting where they feel no need to identify the place. I feel that when a location is easily identifiable, it can often detract from that. For me, painting a landscape isn’t about depicting a particular place, but painting somewhere without boundaries or national identity. Through my years of work, the need to invoke a sense of the sublime through the elements, especially water and air has persisted almost as an obsession.’

Art on the Harbourside

No 1 Harbourside is proud to present a collaborative photography exhibition this month named On A Wing and  Prayed by Bristol based photographer Bella Gaffney and Berlin based photographer Sophie Le Roux. We want to support local artists by showcasing their work for a month and give our No 1 Harbourside guests a chance to see some truly interesting art, schmooze with the artists at their launch event and maybe even  purchase some art from struggling artists.

This month we have the collection named Scrapes (2018) from Berlin based photographer Sophie Le Roux. The series, shot of the island of La Palma in January 2018, depicts accidental artworks left behind by the wear and tear of the city, often overlooked. Sophie Le Roux is a British photographer exploring the unfamiliar in the mundane and the charisma in decay.

Bella Gaffney is a Bristol/London based photographer. Drawn to cheap and tacky aesthetics and vivid colours, her photography frames the random marks left by people in the city, focusing on the outdated and unappreciated. She has a particular interest in the meaningful interaction between people and place. Bella will be presenting a varied collection depicting some of her more well-known work as well as samples from her new collections.

The exhibition will run until the middle of May so ensure to come on down, eat some food, grab a pint (or a special gin from our guest gin menu) and appreciate the creativity.
