#lovefoodgivefood Action against hunger at No.1 Harbourside

This autumn, we’re thrilled to be taking part once again in Love Food Give Food for Action Against Hunger. We’re joining forces with hundreds of restaurants across the UK, raising funds to help save the lives of malnourished children, and provide their families with access to nutritious food. During September we will be donating 25p from all of our main dishes to support Action Against Hunger’s vision of a world free from hunger.

A big thank you to you, our amazing customers for joining us in supporting this fantastic cause and challenging child hunger worldwide.

Artist Pilar Cortés Guest Post: Paintings. From the past.

Pilar Cortés. Paintings. From the past.

I am very grateful to have the opportunity to exhibit at the No.1 Harbourside. This time, I will take the opportunity to exhibit some old paintings that have never been exhibited before. In doing so, I am showing these paintings with the intention of selling them at at a considerably reduced rate in order to subsidise my upcoming solo exhibition in Hamilton House the end of August (details to come soon) as well as funding material costs for future paintings.

I am a Mexican painter, graduated in 2007 with BA in Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), based in Bristol, UK since 2008. After 6 years of working from Coexist, Hamilton House, I now work at my studio at Mivart Studios, Bristol.

My work has been exhibited widely throughout more than 30 exhibitions in Mexico, Colombia, the UK and Spain. Highlighted shows include 3005 Women in Mexican Fine Arts, Museum of Mexico City; 2017 Threshold Festival, Unit 51, Baltic Creative, Liverpool, UK; 2014 Fascinate digital arts Conference and Showcase, Falmouth University.

‘It seems the need to define people’s identities through the question of where they come from, extends not just to individuals but also to landscape painting. I want the viewer to form a relationship with the painting where they feel no need to identify the place. I feel that when a location is easily identifiable, it can often detract from that. For me, painting a landscape isn’t about depicting a particular place, but painting somewhere without boundaries or national identity. Through my years of work, the need to invoke a sense of the sublime through the elements, especially water and air has persisted almost as an obsession.’

Art on the Harbourside

No 1 Harbourside is proud to present a collaborative photography exhibition this month named On A Wing and  Prayed by Bristol based photographer Bella Gaffney and Berlin based photographer Sophie Le Roux. We want to support local artists by showcasing their work for a month and give our No 1 Harbourside guests a chance to see some truly interesting art, schmooze with the artists at their launch event and maybe even  purchase some art from struggling artists.

This month we have the collection named Scrapes (2018) from Berlin based photographer Sophie Le Roux. The series, shot of the island of La Palma in January 2018, depicts accidental artworks left behind by the wear and tear of the city, often overlooked. Sophie Le Roux is a British photographer exploring the unfamiliar in the mundane and the charisma in decay.

Bella Gaffney is a Bristol/London based photographer. Drawn to cheap and tacky aesthetics and vivid colours, her photography frames the random marks left by people in the city, focusing on the outdated and unappreciated. She has a particular interest in the meaningful interaction between people and place. Bella will be presenting a varied collection depicting some of her more well-known work as well as samples from her new collections.

The exhibition will run until the middle of May so ensure to come on down, eat some food, grab a pint (or a special gin from our guest gin menu) and appreciate the creativity.
