Leanne Stephens – artist in our venue

We are delighted to welcome Leanne Stephens to our venue as our featured artist.

leanne in the studio in front of her artwork

A Bristol-based abstract artist Leanne works with Edgy textures, ambiguous forms and romantic colours. Having graduated from Bath uni where she studied fine art, Leanne’s panoramas of lush, tropical terrain are a warm and blushing tapestry of possibility, born from a desire to present a planet unaffected by the climate crisis.

The Interview

We asked Leanne a few questions to get to know her better!

Why Bristol? I live and work in Bristol, I grew up here and it has such an extensive and impactful art scene, with a rich artistic history and I love that I get to play a small part in that. I hope I get to continue to show more locally in the future too.

How is post-pandemic creativity working for you? Have you changed any working practices? In the height of the pandemic, I moved my studio practice home and into a smaller space. The restriction seemed to invigorate a more expressionistic way of painting than I was using pre-pandemic. That has continued to feed into my practice even now. It also made me think more about how artwork looks digitally. There was a moment when everything was moving online and with my work being so colourful it can get lost in digital form. It taught me to be considerate of that when choosing a palette to work with in each piece. I’m also much more pro-active when it comes to photographing my work for this reason which is a major plus!

Artworks

What spurs you on to keep creating?I consider painting to be a meditative practice, my mind is always busy and it helps me to create space. Even if I didn’t have exhibitions or sell, I would still create because ultimately, I paint for me. Getting to show or sell etc is a bonus. It is healthy to take breaks from it of course, but I think I will always come back to my creative practice.

Where are your best places in Bristol for checking out art? I find it hard to make myself find time for seeing art even though I should place it higher on the agenda as I always gain so much from it! For that reason, I do love unexpectedly stumbling across art. I think venues like No.1 Harbourside and The Old Market Assembly are perfect for people like me! Otherwise, when I make the effort to go and see a specific exhibition, it is the usual spots. Arnolfini, RWA etc are great for checking in with what’s relevant.

If you could exhibit anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’d be happy exhibiting anywhere that would have me! I love the idea of exhibiting internationally as I love to travel. I would use that as an excuse to go and explore a new place

To the future!

What’s next? Where else can people find out about you? Next up for me, I will be showing at BV Open Studios. Fri 12th- Sun 14th April. We open our doors at BV Studios for the weekend, so many varied creative practices to see, all welcome!

You can find me: www.leannestephens.com Instagram: @leanne_stephensart

Leanne’s work will be up until the end of April and is all for sale. Generously, she is donating 50% of any sales to Caring In Bristol. Helping the vulnerable and homeless in our beloved Bristol. Beautiful work that does good – come buy!

Food Made Good 3-star accreditation!

We have, in 2023, achieved an incredible 3-star rating in the Food Made Good Standard. Scoring an impressive 92% across our group, The Assemblies, this is our highest rating to date! With our three venues, The Canteen, No.1 Harbourside and The Old Market Assembly we are breaking ground in the hospitality sphere. Our 2023 highlights are:

Net Zero Now – We’ve been accredited as “on the road” to Net Zero, calculating our carbon and educating our teams on the importance of minimising our environmental impact.

✅ Sourcing – Continuing to work with our great wealth of Southwest producers and develop our menus seasonally, with lots of plant-based options.

✅ Society: Hosting workshops, free live music and supporting artists by giving them a platform to develop their talent across all our spaces.

Food Made Good Standard Award

Since we opened we’ve been committed to creating beautiful venues that support local producers, our team and the local community. We’ve been SRA members for over 10 years. Their Food Made Good Standard award perfectly reflects our core values of People, Planet & Profit. Giving us a great framework to work within and towards. With the data from both their report and our Net Zero Now report, also received this year, we can set ourselves realistic targets to work towards.

2024 and beyond

Some of the targets we have set for the venue in 2024 are:

  • reduce beef and lamb on our menu
  • setting waste reduction targets
  • reduce gas and electricity use

There is lots more we can and will do over 2024, but for now we’re basking in the glory. We’d like to thank all our customers who are on the journey with us. We hope to see you here soon, so you can celebrate with us!

Naomi Wilkinson: May – Aug

It’s summer and we’ve got beautiful artwork to brighten your walls.

Adorning the walls in our venue is Naomi Wilkinson, an illustrator based right here, in Bristol (of course). Creating colourful and sustainable illustrated products. Her ever-expanding range of prints are produced locally, wrapped by hand without plastic and walked to the post office where possible!

Impressed with risography, a printing method from Japan growing in popularity, she continues to focus on creating her own range of prints and products.

We asked her a few questions to get to know her better!

Why Bristol? I grew up just outside Bristol and went to school here – it totally spoilt me and no other city quite measured up to it in terms of friendliness and creativity , also love that its so close to the countryside

How have your working practices developed over time? So much! My work started out as quite muted gouache paintings, I’m also tweaking and trying to develop things as my inspirations grow and shift.

What spurs you on / keeps you creating? I just love what I do so the fear of not being able to do it for a job spurs me on to keep going and try to keep developing!

Where are your best places in Bristol for checking out art? I love the Arnolfini but I really like checking out artist open days and illustration fairs like the Shake illustration fair which is really diverse and I love how accessible and friendly the Bristol illustration world is.

If you could exhibit anywhere in the world, where would it be? I think I’d say Japan just so I have an excuse to go there!

What’s next? I’m currently working on three books! Also the clothing company Gorman have created a range of kids clothing featuring my designs which will be out soon!

Where else can people find out about you? My insta

Naomi’s work will be on display on our stage until the end of August, making the place look very pretty. It’s all available to buy – just get in touch directly with Naomi and start planning your presents!

Raquel Blazquez – 29th November – 29th January

New exhibition “Stories From The Past” is on from 29th November at No.1 Harbourside with artist Raquel Blazquez.

Raquel Blazquez paints figurative colourful portraits. Curious about the human mind and subconscious she explores human emotions, trauma and connections through her paintings. Using art as her therapy Raquel hopes to bring discussions about mental health and healing. Believing that if we take care of our mental health, the world will be a better place for all.

We caught up with Raquel, and got to know her a little bit better. The exhibition runs from 29th November until 29th January.

Make sure you pop in for a coffee, cocktail, or cup of tea to enjoy!

Why Bristol?

I am originally from Barcelona. I moved to Bristol without ever being here, following the stories of art, nature and freedom. I think Bristol was calling me. In my years here I developed from not believing I was creative, to having my own art bussiness.

What spurs you on / keeps you creating?

I realised I need to create. I believe creation is a human need that can’t be ignored. Creativity brings expression and beauty to the world. It’s easy to get discouraged and to feel fear, but art in itself is the best teaching and therapy.

Where are your best places in Bristol for checking out art?

I love the street art all over Bristol, and Upfest is one of my favourite days. I also love discovering new artists in the different Art Trails. Arnolfini and Spike Island are always a safe bet!

If you could exhibit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I recently visited the Biennial of Venice. That would be a dream. I would also like to exhibit in my hometown, in Barcelona.

What’s next?

I’m planning to continue growing in Bristol, taking all the wonderful opportunities here. I am also looking forward to exhibiting in different art fairs in London and the South of England.

Where else can people find out about you?

I have a website www.raquelblazquezart.com where you can find more about my art, my online shop and a blog where we can talk about mental health, society, emotions and healing.

NB: All works are for sale. Please ask a member of our bar team for more info.
